Study on the Zinc Corrosion Resistance and Failure Mechanism of Cobalt-Based Carbide Coatings

To study the protective effect of thermal spraying cobalt-based carbide coatings on hot-dip galvanized sinker rolls, a WC-12Co coating was prepared 316 L stainless steel substrate using supersonic flame method. The corroded in molten liquid zinc at 430 °C to analyze service life and failure process. results show that provided good protection base metal. process Zn first diffused into reacted chemically with Co between particles, forming Co-Zn compound. Then, some transverse cracks appeared through compound layer, resulting microstructure falling off blocks zinc, causing gradual thinning thickness, which eventually failed loosened its effect. types compounds were analyzed by energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) x-ray diffraction (XRD), formation further investigated placing pure rods same temperature. It found there two formed, Co5Zn21 CoZn13, produced then transformed CoZn13 diffusion aggregation Zn, main cause cracking coatings.
